He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin at home, the third of seven children.  He attended public and parochial schools, graduating from Appleton High School in June of 1941.  He spent three years in the United States Air Force, part of that time in Florida and the rest in California.  After his war service he attended Golden Gate College in San Francisco, earning a degree in accounting and set up an accounting practice in Visalia, CA, continuing in practice for 16 years, and then worked as an auditor for the State of California for 12 years.  He married Patricia Douglas in Porterville, CA in 1945, who died in a car accident in 1971.  A year later he married Dorothy Conaway.

He lived in Visalia for forty years where he was on the Board of Directors of the Tuberculosis Association for 16 years and the Hear Foundation for six years. He was an active member and served twice as president of the Accounting Society.

In January, 1995 he moved to Port Angeles where he served on the Board of Directors of Serenity House, was a member of the Power Squadron, was an active member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 430, a member of the Airport Advisory Board of Port Angeles, was an enthusiastic league bowler, experimented with several sizes of boats and motorcycles, and toured much of the country in a motorhome.

Bob has a 53 year history of flying, and owned a variety of planes, but his little Bolkow Jr. was his favorite, and he spent all the time possible in both California and Washington airports working on it or flying.
